A native of the Pacific Island of Guahan, Craig Santos Perez immigrated to California in 1995. He received his MFA from the University of San Francisco (2006), and will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall to pursue a Phd in Ethnic Studies. His poetry, essays, translations, and reviews have appeared (or are forthcoming) in Tinfish, Sentence, Jacket, Rain Taxi, Traffic, Slope, and Calque, among others. only one tree, one translation, one syllable opening/ in
the new mosaic of the field / all occasional things close
into silence / or maybe we weren't looking / when the
body became more transparent than water / than birds /
in night's speechless carnival, the tide / leads us into
steep land
